Carmen rode her bicycle across the island. She had been hired to teach a rich girl music lessons and did not want to pass up this cash even though it was so far away. She rode past the Sydney Cole field and through New Waterford and everything in between until she got to the rich part of town. She set her bicycle down just outside the gate of a giant house she could fit ten of her trailer inside. The air felt cleaner here as she breathed it in, almost synthetic. It was nicer?
She knocked on the giant front door of this big house. It had giant metal rings for knocking like in old movies. She knocked again and than waited.
A breeze hefted through the door as it opened and light poured out. Standing there was a young girl with orange, no pink skin and green hair. No one had told Carmen that the girl was half fae. She'd met a half fae or two, she tried not to pay to much attention.
“Hi, are you my music teacher.” The girl gleamed with wide eyes and a giant smile.
“Yes, I am. My name is Carmen, what’s yours?” Carmen asked.
“I’m Tyler, you’re tall you know that.” Tyler said taking Carmen by the hand and leading her into the house. It was a large open floor plan with plenty of natural light. The house smelled of pine sol and strawberries. The air was warm but the house barely seemed lived in. Tyler kept leading Carmen through room after room, down long hallways, until they got to what Carmen assumed was Tyler’s room. A big four poster bed and plenty of posters for different cartoons on the walls. A lot less pink then Carmen would have guessed, Tyler’s skin must have been more than enough pink for Carmen. Aside from the hum of the air conditioning, there was a beeping noise coming from Tyler’s bed.
“What’s that noise?” Carmen asked.
“Oh, that’s,” Tyler rushed over to her bed and started digging through her sheets before pulling out a tamagotchi. “My pet, you want to see?"
“Oh yeah totally,” Carmen replied putting on a big smile. She liked kids, because you always got to be a little more theatrical around them. There was always a chance for performance and Carmen loved to perform.
After the brief show and tell Carmen pulled out her guitar and they got started. Tyler grabbed a small blue guitar out from under a pile of dirty clothes. Despite how clean the rest of the house was this whirlwind of a kid probably moved to fast for whatever maid that worked here to clean up after her.
They went over the basics and Tyler was patient and attentive, a fast learner too. Carmen was impressed. She decided, she liked this Kid. She started to teach Tyler a song hoping she would pick up switching between chords as fast as she picked up the chords themselves. Tyler was not great at it but she made up for that in pure energy and excitement. Tyler stood and started to perform for Carmen. And then some of the chords started to flow into each other but not many. Tyler noticed and played harder. And that’s when Carmen realized Tyler was hovering a foot and a half off of the ground.
“YOooo.” Carmen could not help herself.
“What?” Tyler sounded nervous dropping back to the floor.
“You, you were flying, that's some serious star power,” Carmen said with awe in her voice.
Tyler’s expression shifted from worry to excitement, "Really, my magic can make me a rock star?"
“Yeah a flying kid is rare imagine everything you could do on stage.” Carmen was also excited. “plus you've already got a sick look, with that pink skin, and your hair.”
Tyler was elated.
“Here watch this,” Carmen said taking a lamp off of the desk next to her and popping it on. Suddenly the light was bouncing off of her skin like a disco ball and making the room full of reds and blues and every other color imaginable. “This is my gift, being a magic person can really wow a crowd. And if you keep playing you could wow any crowd.”
Now Tyler was amazed. “That’s so cool, you were already cool, but now you are the coolest.”
Carmen smiled.
“Do you know any fae? I have always wanted to meet a fae,” the words flying out of Tyler’s mouth now her excitement overly apparent.
“Here or there, I've seen some at shows in the crowd, but never on stage.” Carmen replied. "You could be the first half fae rockstar, or at least the first one I know."
“Oh no, I mean, my dad is Fae but we’ve never met.” A sad look overtaking Tyler’s face again. “My step dad does not like to talk about him, and so I do not really know anything. I want to meet some Fae so I can better understand you know and I was hoping you could help me out with that. With finding someone”
Carmen could not stand the look on this kids face. “I tell you what kid, I will ask around and see if I cannot find out anything before our next lesson and see if I cannot introduce you to at least one fae. But you've got to make sure you practice before than. You can How’s that sound, we have a deal?”
“Oh deal, for real. I can’t wait.” Tyler flipped back to a big smile thanks to her new friend. Picking up her guitar again she started to strum.
Carmen left that day not knowing what she had gotten herself into. Sure she had seen some fae around but she didn’t know any, well at least not any she liked. And she did not want to upset Tyler’s parents who where paying her. More than that though she didn’t want to upset Tyler so Carmen knew what she was going to do next. She just met this kid, but she liked her.
